History and origin
They claim descent from Kush, the son of the Hindu god Ram. The community get their name from the word koshta, which means raw silk. According to their traditions, koshti was a nickname of a king of Devagiri(Berar). The name of the king being Rajhans. The king Rajhans had been honoured by the title of Koshti in the year 1111 A.D. It was mentioned that the word Koshti was for the man of virtues, and the Koshti are descendents of this king. After this episode, Koshti had taken up jobs as soldiers in different erstwhile princely states. They were in the armies of Peshwas and also in the army of Tipu Sultan. Some people of the community believe that they belonged to the kushwaha thakur which originated the name koshti, i.e. kush from the word kushwaha and tha from the word thakur, and the name koshti formed (as the words get distorted in the same way in sanskrit). They belong to the Kshatriya varna of hindu caste system. But as means of earning livelihood they started weaving of clothes
